Guard Against Credit Card Fraud

If you've ever misplaced or lost a credit card, you may have felt your stomach sink and started panicking. No one wants credit card fraud or identity theft to happen to them. Thankfully, there are several steps you can take to help keep your cards and personal information safe.

Credit Card Smarts
  • Sign the back of your card when it arrives.
  • Shred old cards – make sure the magnetic strip and numbers are destroyed.
  • Don't display your card's number in the checkout line, at a restaurant, or at an ATM. Cover it until you are ready to pay.
  • Only use your card at merchants you know and trust – this includes orders by phone or online. Make sure web sites have security measures in place when you enter your card information.
  • Don't carry several cards. Stick with one or two cards you trust, such as your DCU Visa®.
  • Review your credit card statement each month. Contact us right away if you spot unauthorized charges.
  • Do not respond to emails or text messages seeking your card information. DCU will never ask for card details it already has.
  • Do not give your card number by phone if you did not initiate the call. Again, DCU will not ask for this information by phone.
  • Notify DCU if you are moving and complete a change of address form. You can do this through PC Branch under Contact Us.
  • Keep card information and emergency phone numbers in a safe place that you can quickly access if your card is ever lost or stolen. Report DCU Visa card loss or fraudulent activity immediately by calling the Information Center at the numbers listed in the Contact Us box below. DCU will deactivate your account, stop the losses, and order a replacement card(s).

How DCU Protects You

With Visa's® Zero Liability protection, you are not liable for fraudulent activity on your Visa by others. In addition, DCU helps ensure your DCU Visa Card's safety with:

Card activation. When you receive a new card, it will have a sticker with a phone number on it that you will need to activate the card. This prevents the card from being used if it is stolen in the mail.

Neural networks. Sophisticated technology monitors your transaction activity for unusual charges. For example, we may contact you if there are charges in another country. Important tip: If you are traveling, notify DCU ahead of time so your card will work at your destination.

Verified by Visa. This optional free service verifies card ownership when you make online purchases. Learn more at dcu.org under Credit Cards under Loans/Visa. Then select the Verified by Visa icon in the left-hand bar.
