It's Getting Colder
Tips to Trim Energy Costs
Did you know keeping your home warm and toasty during the
winter months can account for almost half of your energy bill?
Before you lock the thermostat on 60 degrees and require everyone in your home to wear Snuggies,™ consider the following tips from the U.S. Department of Energy for reducing heating costs.
- Caulk and weatherstrip windows and doors that leak air.
- Clean warm-air registers, baseboard heaters, and radiators. Make sure they are not blocked by furniture, carpeting, or drapes.
- Install a programmable thermostat that will automatically adjust the temperature according to your schedule. For example, it can keep your home cooler when you are at work and warmer in the evenings when you are home.
- Turn off kitchen and bathroom ventilating fans within 20 minutes of cooking and showering to retain heated air.
- Insulate heating ducts in unheated areas such as attics and crawlspaces. Also insulate your hot water heater and hot water pipes to prevent heat loss.
- Clean or replace furnace filters once a month. Make sure your furnace or heat pump receives professional maintenance each year.
- Replace old appliances with new ENERGY STAR® products. Appliances with the ENERGY STAR label can cut energy bills by
up to 30%.
