Shopping Online? Keep These Safety Tips in Mind

Saving gas, avoiding crowded malls, selecting gifts while the kids are asleep … holiday shopping from the comfort of your computer can be appealing on several levels. To help ensure the holidays will be merry for your gift recipients as well as yourself, consider these safety questions before entering your credit card number on a web site.

Is the site for real? A reputable seller will include a detailed item description and contact information such as a mailing address and phone number. If a site looks amateur or disorganized, you may want to research the seller’s history and call before placing your order to make sure the company is legitimate.

Is the site secure? When you make a purchase, a web site should have security features in place, such as encryption for your personal information. A small padlock may appear on your browser indicating that a transaction is secure, or you may see “https” in the address bar. Many web sites require you to set up a username and password for your protection. Choose a password that includes both letters and numbers and isn’t easily recognizable.

Will your information be kept private? Look for a privacy policy on the site, and read it to determine if the seller can share your information with outside parties.

What is the return policy? Note the company’s return policy before you buy. Some companies offer free shipping for returns, while others require you to pay shipping, handling or re-stocking fees.

Be Wise with StreetWise
Protect Your Personal Information

Millions of people enjoy the convenience of online shopping, and the majority of companies do their best to safeguard your purchases and personal information – after all, they want you to return and buy again! But common sense goes a long way when shopping via computer. If you receive an email or phone call asking for your check or credit card number, credit union account numbers, passwords, PINs, or other personal information, do not respond. Legitimate companies will not email or call you for these details.
