Be a Savvy Car Buyer!
Understanding Your First Car Loan

So, you're looking to buy your first car. Sounds easy enough. All you have to do is find the make and model you want in your favorite color for a good price and it's a done deal, right?

If only car shopping was that easy. Getting a new or used vehicle today can take a lot of time, research, and negotiation. Teens especially need to do their homework before buying a vehicle since they typically end up paying more for their cars than adults.

Take Control
Arming yourself with information before you set foot in a dealership is the best way to ensure that you end up with a good deal on a vehicle. The following are a few tips to keep in mind when you decide to buy a car.

  • Save yourself some money. A good car doesn't have to cost a lot of money. You can buy a cheaper car that is reliable if you do your homework. Consider buying a used car from an individual instead of a dealership. Or, purchase a vehicle with fewer options.

  • Verify insurance costs. Before you buy that shiny red sports car, find out how much collision and damage insurance will cost. Once you see the numbers, you may opt for a four-door sedan instead.

  • Use credit widely. Taking out a loan carries major responsibility. How you choose to pay off the loan can be a big factor that affects your credit for years to come. For example, skipping payments or making late payments can make it difficult for you to get loans in the future, even if the loan is co-signed by your parents. Stick to the payment rules to keep your credit report in good standing.
