Tips on How to Save Money in College
Tips on How to Save Money in College

Whether you are an incoming freshman or a returning college student, you are probably gearing up for the new semester. Learning how to reduce your expenses now can help you establish a good financial future. Here are some tips on how to save money in college.

  • Buy used books. Books for college courses are expensive. You will probably find good prices at amazon.com.* If you can't find the books you need, check out the used books at your college book store. Avoid buying new ones if possible.

  • Learn to cook. Going out to eat can put a significant dent in your budget. If you don't know how to cook, start learning. It can be healthier and even cheaper than fast food.

  • Get on a campus meal plan. If possible, get a meal plan on your campus. Your cost per meal can be very inexpensive.

  • Shop at secondhand stores. A great place to look for clothes and household furnishings is at thrift stores. Check out thethriftshopper.com for a list of your local thrift stores.*

  • Take advantage of free or cheap activities. Many college campuses have a lot of student activities, most of which are free or very cheap.

  • Take advantage of student discounts. There are several places that will give you a discount with your student I.D. Seek out places that cater to college students and offer discounts.

  • Budget your spending money for the entire semester. At the beginning of the semester, figure out what you have available for spending money each week, and stick to it.
