Spring 2007

Every time you turn on a light, take a shower or open the refrigerator, it costs money. The average U.S. family spends $1,500 a year on energy bills. *

Energy Matters
We use different kinds of energy: electricity, natural gas, oil, coal, solar energy (from the sun) and even wind. If we aren't careful with how much energy we use today, someday it may be gone. Help the earth and save energy – and money – at home with these tips:

  • Turn off lights, the TV and video games when you're not using them.
  • Ask your parents to buy fluorescent light bulbs. They cost more to buy but use less energy and last longer, saving money in the long run.
  • Don't leave the refrigerator door open. Decide what you want before opening the refrigerator so you can be quick.
  • Don't run hot water if you're not using it. It takes energy to heat the water in your home.
  • Put on a sweater or sweatshirt if you're cold, instead of asking to turn up the heat.

Energy-Free Activities
Help your family learn about saving energy by planning an activity with one rule: no electricity allowed.

  • Ride your bikes instead of driving.
  • Play games outside rather than using energy inside.
  • Fly kites instead of surfing the Internet or playing video games.

You may be surprised at how fun saving energy can be!
