 How Secure Is Your Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi, or a wireless Internet connection, is a convenient and exciting option for computer users. Before you go wireless, take extra safety precautions to protect your computer, files and finances.

Lock Up at Home
To secure your Wi-Fi system at home, consider these tips:
  • Make sure any recommended security software is installed and keep it updated.
  • Check that your connection is protected by a firewall.
  • Delete all your cookies before initiating a Wi-Fi connection.
  • Use encrypted connections to send and receive e-mail.
Be Alert While on the Go
Hot spots, or venues that offer Wi-Fi access, are popping up everywhere. The same tips that apply at home also apply when you're on the go. In addition:
  • Don't perform financial transactions on public networks. If you're not sure about security, use a prepaid credit or wireless card.
  • Disable your file and printer sharing.
  • If you wish to work offline, remove or disable your Wi-Fi card.
  • Be aware of prying eyes. Others may try to look over your shoulder to glimpse your passwords or other information.
