Scam-Busting Basics
Here's the "secret weapon" for fighting fraud: Don't give out your account numbers, PIN, password, Social Security number or other identifying information if you did not initiate the contact. This strategy is your best defense against scams via phone, e-mail, text message, direct mail or website.
The Scams Are Smart …
Fraudsters are quick to capitalize on current events, especially in tight economic times. Here's the rundown on the latest scams:
- Economic stimulus scams. Bogus websites and pop-up ads claim to help you qualify for a share of the $787 billion stimulus package signed by President Obama.
- Tax refund scams. A phony e-mail or letter claiming to be from the IRS asks you to submit your financial information to process your refund.
- Phishing scams. An e-mail with a link to an authentic-looking website (for example, a fake PayPal website) asks you to update your credit union account information to avoid service interruption or other consequences.
- Text messaging scams. A text message might ask for sensitive financial information and/or charge extremely high rates for texting back.
… But You're Smarter
If something sounds fishy, don't take the bait. Also remember:
LFCU will never ask for your PIN or credit card number on the phone or via e-mail. If you have doubts about the authenticity of a call or e-mail, confirm the request by calling a phone number you know is valid, or visiting the website you know is correct.
Contact LFCU immediately if something seems suspicious. For added protection, set up e-mail alerts to notify you when your balance drops below a specified level, a check clears and more. Set up your e-mail alerts by choosing "alerts" in LFCU's Online Banking service.

Beware of Loan Modification Scams
LFCU members should also beware of companies that offer assistance
with modifying the terms of their home loans. While there are some
legitimate loan modification programs available, others prey on
consumers who are struggling to meet their mortgage payments.
The biggest red flag is when a company asks for a sizable fee up front.
These companies are not looking to help you – they are looking to walk
away with your cash.
LFCU is here to educate you regarding the programs available to modify
your mortgage, and we offer this service at a reasonable fee to our
members. Call (800) 328-LFCU and ask to speak with the Real Estate
Loan Servicing department.
