Before you shop, figure out what type
of car you want to buy and how much

edmunds.com and kbb.com* can show you
what the market value is for the make and
model you are interested in.
Consumer Reports (consumerreports.org)
offers new car and used car price reports
that tell you the real dealer cost including any
additional incentives and holdbacks.* Shoot
for a price of 4% to 8% over dealer cost. And
edmunds.com offers the TMV (True Market
Value) service that shows you the price you
can expect to pay in your market.
It's also a good idea to contact the dealer
or seller to find out what additional taxes
and fees they charge. Some of these are
negotiable too, if they are not found on
the original invoice.
