What Are QR codes?
A QR (quick response) code is a type of two-dimensional
barcode like the one shown below. First designed for
the automotive industry, they are now being used in many
different industries and applications. QR codes contain more
embedded information than traditional bar codes, and they
can be quickly and reliably scanned. Although trademarked,
the use of QR codes is free of any licenses.
QR codes can store information a company wishes to use
and may appear in newspapers, magazines, advertisements,
signs, business cards or on almost any item about which users
might need information. Smartphones with a camera, like
the iPhone® and AndroidTM, can download a QR reader app.
Scanning a QR code can display text, contact information,
connect to a wireless network or open a web page in the
phone’s browser.
A Word of Caution
While QR codes may be beneficial to businesses and
consumers, there may also be opportunities for malicious use that could put a computer’s contents and user’s privacy
at risk. QR codes with bad intent can easily be created and
affixed over legitimate QR codes. Risks include linking to
dangerous web sites, enabling the microphone/camera/GPS
and access to sensitive data like passwords, files, contacts
and transactions.
While QR codes are relatively new, their use is expanding
in the U.S. and around the world, especially as the use of
smartphones grows. St. Mary’s Bank will begin to deploy
QR codes in some of its communications. Scan the QR
code shown here and discover how it can be used.
