Available Funds vs. Cleared Funds

You may have noticed that checks you deposit are available much sooner than they used to be. But available funds doesn't mean cleared funds, so here are some things you should remember to better manage your money and avoid overdrafts and related fees.

  • Due to federal requirements, most funds are made available before the checks have actually "cleared" the paying financial institution.
  • We cannot tell you a check has cleared unless it's drawn on St. Mary's Bank – only the paying financial institution knows this.
  • Be cautious of any new checks received in the mail, especially from non-local companies.
  • Never follow instructions to deposit the check and send funds to someone via Western Union, electronic debit or wire transfer.
  • If you're unsure for any reason about a deposited check, ask for assistance before you use the deposited money.

If you have questions, call the Member Contact Center at 888.786.2791 or stop by any retail location.
